Auto glass replacement in Winston-Salem is not only about windshields. Searchers in the city ask about car window repair and car window replacement as often as most other glass jobs, and the reason is plain: door glass and back glass break all at once, usually after a break-in, a stone kicked up at speed, a branch in a storm or a door shut hard on a window that was already damaged. This page covers the glass around the rest of the car: front and rear door windows, the small quarter glass behind the rear doors, vent glass and the rear window, or back glass.

Winston-Salem Auto Glass is Impex Auto Glass serving Winston-Salem, NC. Impex replaces door, quarter and back glass at your vehicle, at home, at work or wherever the car is safely parked, and works with all major insurance providers. For the windshield itself, see windshield replacement in Winston-Salem.

Why side and rear glass is replaced, not repaired
A windshield is laminated: two sheets of glass with a plastic layer between, which is why a chip in it can be filled with resin. Most door glass and back glass is tempered instead. Tempered glass is heat-treated so that when it fails it breaks into small, blunt pieces instead of long shards. That is safer for anyone inside, but it means there is nothing left to repair. Once a tempered window cracks, the whole pane goes, and the only fix is a new one.
Some newer vehicles use laminated glass in the front doors as well, for quiet and security. Those windows can crack without falling out. They are still normally replaced rather than repaired, and they cost more to buy. Checking the part by the vehicle identification number, which Impex does before it orders, is how the right type comes the first time.
First steps after a window is broken
- Take valuables and documents out of the car, and photograph the damage for your insurer and, after a break-in, for the police report.
- Do not try to pull loose pieces out of the door frame by hand. Tempered glass edges are small but sharp, and pieces will be inside the door.
- Cover the opening with heavy plastic sheeting taped to the paint, not to the glass edge, to keep rain out until the visit.
- Avoid the car wash and highway speeds with the opening covered; the plastic will not hold at speed on I-40.
- Tell Impex which window it is, the vehicle’s year, make and model, and the VIN if you have it.

Door window replacement, step by step
Door glass sits inside the door, held in a regulator that raises and lowers it. Replacing it is a matter of opening the door, clearing it of glass and setting the new pane in the regulator so it runs true.
- The door panel comes off. Trim fasteners, the handle surround and switch connectors are released and the inner panel is set aside.
- The broken glass is cleared. Pieces are vacuumed out of the door, the run channels and the floor, and the glass that fell into the bottom of the door is removed.
- The regulator is checked. The mechanism that moves the window is checked for damage from the break.
- The new glass goes in. The pane is set into the regulator, aligned in its channels and tightened.
- Everything is tested. The window is run up and down, the seal checked, the panel refitted and the interior vacuumed again.
Impex says a side window replacement takes 30 to 60 minutes and the car can be driven immediately afterwards. There is no urethane to cure in a door window, so the wait that follows a windshield does not apply.
Back glass and the rear defroster
The rear window is a bigger job. On most cars it is bonded into the body like a windshield, and it often carries the thin lines of the rear defroster and, on many models, a radio antenna printed into the glass. When it shatters, the pieces spread through the cabin and the trunk or cargo area, so a good part of the visit is cleaning.
- The remaining glass is removed from the frame and the cabin, trunk and seats are vacuumed.
- The trim around the opening is lifted and the old adhesive cut back.
- The new back glass, matched to the defroster and antenna layout of your trim by VIN, is set in fresh adhesive.
- The defroster and antenna connections are reattached and tested.
- The trim is refitted and you are told when the car can be driven.
Impex says back glass replacement takes one to two hours, and asks you not to use the rear defroster for 24 hours afterwards so the new glass and its connections are left to settle. On SUVs and hatchbacks the rear window sits in the tailgate and may carry a wiper and a camera nearby, which are refitted as part of the job.

Quarter glass and vent glass
Quarter glass is the small fixed window behind the rear door or behind the front door on some models. It is often bonded or set in a moulded gasket rather than a regulator, so it is replaced more like a small windshield. Vent glass in older and some current vehicles sits in the door frame. These parts vary a great deal between models and trims, and they are the ones most likely to need ordering ahead, which is why the VIN matters most here.
Glass with sensors and cameras near it
Side and rear windows rarely carry the forward camera that runs lane keeping and automatic braking; that lives behind the mirror on the windshield. But a tailgate glass can sit next to a rear camera, and some door mirrors and doors carry blind-spot equipment that is unplugged when the door panel comes off. Everything taken apart is reconnected and checked before you drive. If your windshield was also damaged in the same event, the forward camera is a separate question, covered on the ADAS calibration in Winston-Salem page.
Insurance for a broken car window
A window broken by a thief, a falling branch or a thrown stone is a comprehensive loss in North Carolina. The NC Department of Insurance lists ‘Breakage of glass’ and ‘Missiles or falling objects’ among the losses comprehensive coverage pays, less your deductible. Because door glass often costs less than a windshield, compare the quote with your deductible before you claim. If the damage happened in a collision, the claim may go under collision coverage instead; your insurer will tell you which.
Under G.S. 58-3-180 you choose who repairs the vehicle, and the insurer pays the same amount whatever shop you pick. Impex works with all major insurance providers and quotes each job with no hidden fees, upsells, delivery charges, fuel fees or disposal fees.

Questions people ask
How long does car window replacement take?
Impex says a side window takes 30 to 60 minutes and can be driven immediately. Back glass takes one to two hours, and you should leave the rear defroster off for 24 hours afterwards.
Can a cracked side window be repaired?
Usually not. Most side and rear windows are tempered glass, which breaks into small pieces all at once, so the pane is replaced. Laminated door glass on some newer vehicles can crack in place, and it is normally replaced too.
Is a smashed window covered by insurance in NC?
Glass broken by theft, vandalism or a falling object is normally a comprehensive claim, paid less your deductible. Check the deductible against the quote before you claim.
Will you clean up the broken glass?
Yes. Clearing the glass from the door, the run channels and the cabin is part of the job, and on a back glass the trunk or cargo area as well.
Can I drive with plastic over a broken window?
For short, slow trips, carefully. Plastic sheeting will not hold at highway speed, and it is not secure, so most people leave the car parked and have the glass replaced where it sits.
